At a Starbase City Commission Special Meeting on February 3rd, an ordinance was approved for the city of Starbase to establish its own police department. This comes in response to the growth of the city itself and the resulting need for a full-time law enforcement presence.

Previously, Starbase had entered into a 5 year, $3.5 million contract with Cameron County for law enforcement services. The contract, however, was put on hold as it became apparent that it did not account for an appropriate amount of growth within the community and the long-term need to establish a more permanent solution.

The new department will be established with the help of consulting firm Vision Quest Solutions, which is comprised of former law enforcement officers. Applications for the proposed Starbase Police Department will be open locally, as well as nationwide, to fill positions for the department, including one police chief, eight officers and an administrative employee. City Administrator Kent Myers stated that the firm will have 4 months to establish the department, during which time they will provide regular updates to the City Commission and also to the public.
